At the turn of the century, Grayton Beach was vying to be the go-to vacation spot for families from Northwest Florida and Alabama. But the journey was a challenge. No bridges over the Choctawhatchee River! And only sandy trails!
In 1913, W.H. Butler and his son, Van, made the trek from DeFuniak Springs and became the village’s biggest champions. Originally from the Midwest, W.H. was eyeing a resort at Phillips Inlet but found Grayton Beach’s land for half the price. So, he bought most of what is now Grayton Beach. Sweet buy!

South Walton is launching its inaugural SOWAL Jazz Fest this fall, a three-night celebration of music and community. From November 6–8, 2025, the festival will transform 30A venues into intimate jazz clubs, featuring performances that benefit the non-profit SOWAL Foundation.
Attendees can choose from two evening showtimes, 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., at each venue. Tickets grant access to a specific performance, allowing guests to customize their festival experience. With tickets starting at $50, a seat is guaranteed for every guest, whether selecting VIP Reserved Seating or General Admission Seating.
Featured Performances include a Frank Sinatra Tribute by Josh Sirten and The Velvet Jazz Quartet at SOWAL House on Thursday and Friday nights, a Billie Holiday Tribute by Sheila Ford with The Velvet Jazz Quartet at SOWAL House on Saturday night, an Amy Winehouse Tribute by Teresa Lombardi and The Midnight Muses Quartet at Distillery 98 all three nights, and The Quiet Storm, featuring Bobbie Storm, Wayne Mitchum, and Jimmy Ward, delivering coastal jazz and Southern soul at Black Bear’s Bar Room all three nights.
The venues include SOWAL House, a cultural hub known for intimate, world-class performances; Distillery 98, offering craft cocktails, local art, and distillery experiences; and Black Bear’s Bar Room, a cozy Grayton Beach hideaway for soulful jazz.
