A mountain of awesome! At about 65 feet, Blue Mountain Beach claims South Walton’s highest elevation. No climbing gear necessary. Just bring the good camera. Between Grayton Beach and Dune Allen, this stretch of 30A has an Old Florida feel and a personality all its own. High on charm. Low on altitude. Genuinely 30A.
SO, WHY “BLUE”?
Have you heard the story about pirates mistaking Blue Mountain Beach’s dunes for mountains? No? Well, according to local lore, blue lupine once covered the white dunes, catching the eye of sailors passing by in the Gulf. Those flowers gave Blue Mountain its name, and the neighborhood, its most colorful tale yet.
CIRCA 1948
The Old Blue Mountain Beach subdivision was officially laid out in 1948, back when this stretch of coastline was little more than dune lakes, pine trees, and a plat map. “Vacation rental” wasn’t even a phrase yet. The lots have filled in since, but the pace hasn’t. That’s no accident.
TAKE IT SLOW
The coastal dune lakes here are part of the scenery, with Draper and Big Redfish surrounded by live oaks, pines, and low dunes. Ospreys circle overhead, scrub jays work the edges, and the lakes shift from one shade to another as the day moves along. No need to rush. The view isn’t going anywhere.
A GOOD DAY ON THE MOUNTAIN
Cycle the Timpoochee Trail, the paved path that follows 30A past the coastal dune lakes, an easy way to see the coast at your own speed. Explore Longleaf Greenway in Point Washington State Forest, where trails wind through longleaf pine. Then browse Justin Gaffrey Gallery for a little local art. That’s a pretty good day… on the mountain.
